Four Myanmar nationals, including three minor girls, were detained by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) at Katihar railway station after they were allegedly found travelling without valid identity, citizenship or travel documents, officials said on Monday.
The group comprised one adult man and three minor girls. According to the RPF, none of them was carrying a valid passport, proof of citizenship or any other recognised identification document.
RPF Inspector Vikram Kumar said a team led by Trainee Sub-Inspector Sarika Kumari of RPF Post East was deployed on Platform No. 1 on Sunday evening when Train No. 12505, the Kamakhya-Anand Vihar Superfast Express, arrived from the Semapur side.
The personnel noticed the four individuals behaving suspiciously and detained them for verification. During questioning and document checks, they were found to be without valid travel or identity papers.
The RPF subsequently established that the four were of Myanmar origin and handed them over to the Government Railway Police (GRP) for further legal action. A written complaint was also submitted to the GRP.
Officials said seizure procedures and medical examinations were carried out following the detention. Based on the RPF complaint, the GRP registered a case under Section 21 of the Immigration and Foreigners Act and Section 3 of the Passport Act.
One of the individuals, identified as Mohammad Noor, has been arrested, while further legal proceedings are underway.
As the group includes three minor girls, authorities have initiated procedures for producing them before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) under applicable child-protection provisions.
Meanwhile, the RPF and GRP are investigating how the four reached Katihar, where they were headed and whether anyone else was involved in facilitating their movement. Authorities are also examining their intended destination and purpose of travel.
Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
