Ramanuj Goswami, the prime accused in the murder of his wife Riya Talukdar in Guwahati, had no bullet injury on his body, authorities at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) said on Monday, ruling out reports that he was killed in police firing.
Goswami died in the early hours of Monday after allegedly jumping from Narakasur Hills while being taken by police from the Hatigaon area to GMCH through Kahilipara for a blood test. Police said he apparently attempted to escape from custody by jumping from the police vehicle near Narakasur Hills and suffered fatal injuries in the fall.
GMCH Superintendent Dr Debjit Choudhury said Goswami was brought to the casualty ward by police at 3:41 a.m. as a road traffic accident victim and was declared brought dead.
“Today at dawn, at 03:41 a.m., a victim of a road traffic accident, named Ramanuj Goswami, was admitted to the casualty ward of GMCH by the police. He was brought dead,” Choudhury said.
He said immediate tests, including an ECG, were conducted as per protocol, while the exact cause and nature of the injuries would be established through a detailed post-mortem examination.
Hospital authorities said the preliminary examination found no bullet wound on Goswami’s body, contradicting initial reports and social-media claims that he had died in police firing. Choudhury also said the body had several tattoos, though their inscriptions could not be clearly read. It was later shifted to the GMCH morgue for post-mortem.
Goswami was arrested in connection with the murder of his 25-year-old wife, Riya Talukdar, whose body was recovered from their residence in Guwahati’s Basisthapur area earlier this month.
Police had alleged that Riya was killed following an argument, after which Goswami allegedly severed her head and kept it inside a refrigerator. The crime came to light after neighbours detected a foul smell from the locked apartment and alerted the police.
Goswami had surrendered before police following the murder and was subsequently taken into custody. During the investigation, police recreated the crime scene and seized the refrigerator, weapons, clothes and mobile phones for forensic examination.
The accused had also made contradictory statements while in custody. He reportedly said at one point that he had “no regret, no apology” and threatened to kill a man he described as his wife’s “sugar daddy” if released from prison. Days later, he expressed remorse and appealed to others not to repeat what he had done.
With Goswami’s death, the circumstances surrounding his alleged escape attempt and fatal fall have become a fresh line of inquiry. The post-mortem examination is expected to determine the precise cause of death and the nature of the injuries.
Police are also expected to examine how Goswami allegedly managed to jump from custody while being transported for a medical examination.
