Hollywood actress Catherine Zeta-Jones has opened up about using her natural accent on screen, while reflecting on how overnight fame in Britain once overshadowed her identity as an actor.
The actress recently appeared on The Graham Norton Show alongside Sylvester Stallone and Andrew Garfield while promoting her upcoming eight-part action-thriller series Kill Jackie.
Asked whether it was the first time she had acted using her own accent, Zeta-Jones said she had previously done so in projects involving actor-director Anthony Hopkins.
“I’ve done Dylan Thomas. I did a film with Anthony Hopkins, he directed me in that,” she said, adding that she had also recently worked with Hopkins on A Visit to Grandpa.
Zeta-Jones also recalled the impact of the British comedy series The Darling Buds of May, saying the show transformed her career almost overnight.
“That one hour of television changed my life. I became a celebrity overnight and people sort of forgot I was an actor,” she said.
After establishing herself on British television, Zeta-Jones moved to Hollywood and appeared in the 1996 superhero film The Phantom, opposite Billy Zane. She said arriving in Los Angeles meant starting again, as she was largely unknown to American audiences despite her celebrity status in the UK.
“When I went to LA literally nobody knew me, which was a huge ego jolt at first but then extremely humbling, and ultimately very good for me to start afresh,” she said.
In Kill Jackie, Zeta-Jones plays wealthy art dealer Jackie Price, who discovers that she has become the target of a group of lethal assassins known as the Seven Demons.
Describing the role, she said: “It is a gift of a part. The show is crazy and high-octane and she is really crazy.”
