Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday stepped up the BJP’s attack on the Congress over its allegations of “vote chori”, sharing an old Parliament speech by senior advocate and former Union Law Minister Kapil Sibal to question the Opposition party’s claims about deletion of voters’ names from electoral rolls.
Rijiju shared a video of Sibal’s remarks on X, describing the former Law Minister’s explanation as significant in the ongoing political dispute over electoral rolls.
“…He has exposed the bogus vote chori drama of Congress party through his old speech in Parliament as Law Minister!!” Rijiju said in his post, while also making strong personal remarks against Sibal.
In the video, Sibal explains that names can be deleted from electoral rolls under specific circumstances. He cited three categories — when a voter shifts from one Assembly constituency to another, when a name is duplicated on the rolls, and when a voter has died.
Sibal also said that a person whose name has been wrongly deleted can approach the election officer and seek registration.
Rijiju sought to use these remarks to challenge the Congress’ allegations concerning voter deletions, arguing that Sibal’s explanation showed that such deletions are governed by established procedures.
The exchange comes amid a continuing political confrontation between the BJP and Congress over electoral rolls and allegations of irregularities in the electoral process. Opposition parties have been demanding greater transparency from the Election Commission on the issue.
The Congress has continued to raise concerns over alleged voter deletions under the electoral roll revision process, while the BJP has rejected the allegations and accused the Opposition of attempting to cast doubts on the electoral system.
