Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking 25 years at the helm of government, on Wednesday reflected on the experiences that have shaped his public life, saying every crisis tested his patience while every success deepened his sense of responsibility towards the country.
Addressing the ‘Viksit Bharat Sankalp Sabha’, Modi said he had remained a student throughout his life and continued to seek opportunities to learn. He recalled his school days in Vadnagar, saying an eagerness to learn had become a lasting part of his personality.
“I consider myself a student. I try to learn something new every day,” he said, adding that he had prayed for his ability to learn to never diminish because greater learning would strengthen his ability to contribute to the country.
Looking back on his journey, Modi said he felt a sense of gratitude towards people and circumstances that had taught him different lessons. He said success taught him humility, setbacks taught him to rise again, well-wishers provided encouragement and critics prompted introspection.
“Those who supported me showed me the power of trust. Those who opposed me made me understand the power of democracy,” he said.
Modi said the lessons extended to major events and challenges during his public life. He cited the Morbi floods as an experience that strengthened his commitment to relief and service, the Bhuj earthquake as a lesson in perseverance during reconstruction, Chandrayaan as an example of rising after failure, and the Covid-19 pandemic as a reminder of the importance of collective national resolve.
“Every crisis has been a test of my patience, every success has deepened my sense of responsibility, and every achievement has given me the courage and determination to move towards bigger goals,” he said.
The Prime Minister also credited the people’s trust and hard work as his greatest strength, saying every citizen had the greatest right over him. He expressed gratitude to the people for choosing him to lead for 25 consecutive years and described the experience gathered during this period as an asset belonging not to him alone, but to the country.
Modi completed 25 years as head of government on Wednesday, having first taken oath as Gujarat Chief Minister on October 7, 2001, before becoming Prime Minister in 2014.
