Legendary sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan has spoken about Sarod Ghar, a museum housed in his ancestral home in Gwalior, which preserves instruments belonging to his forefathers and other great Indian musicians.

Reflecting on his musical journey and distinctive approach to the sarod, the maestro said he strives to express himself through the instrument as a singer would through the voice.

Speaking to IANS, Amjad Ali Khan said his early sarod is among the instruments preserved at the museum in Gwalior, where he was born.

“I have my younger days sarod in my museum in Gwalior where I was born. Our ancestral home has been converted into a museum, it’s called Sarod Ghar. All the instruments of my forefathers and other great masters of India, it’s all there,” he said.

He added that several renowned musicians had donated their instruments to the museum, helping preserve India’s rich musical heritage.

“Lot of great musicians have donated their instruments. Great musicians, they have donated their instruments. And every sarod player, they gave their best,” he said.

The maestro noted that every sarod player develops a distinctive sound and musical identity, shaped by individual preferences and artistic expression.

“And every sarod player has a different desire, different kind of sound. My father’s sarod was different sound. And Anaman sounds different, Ayan sound different. And my sound, finally, by the grace of God, I don’t play sarod. I sing through my instrument,” he said.

Emphasising the importance of melody and expression, he said that every musician approaches the instrument with a different artistic purpose.

“The singing is most important to bring out… So every sarod player has a different mission, every sarod player. And I’m very happy that today there are about 500 sarod players all over the world. So the future of sarod is very bright in every field, whether sitar, tabla, gana, dance. There are amazing youngsters,” he added.

The maestro also highlighted the promising future of Indian classical music, expressing optimism about the younger generation of musicians and the continued global presence of the sarod.

Meanwhile, his wife, Subhalakshmi Borooah Khan, has made her vocal debut with the album “Chants for Unity”.

The album features nine tracks, including Subhalakshmi Borooah Khan’s vocals across five sacred compositions: Navagraha Shlokam, Krishna Stuti, Shantakaram, Ya Devi Sarvabhooteshu and Lakshmi Stuti.

“Chants for Unity” also brings together the family musically, with the Bangash brothers and their father, legendary sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan, involved in conceiving and composing the project.
