The Congress and its ally Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on Sunday criticised BJP president Nitin Nabin over his remarks against Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of repeating the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s (RSS) narrative and urging him to focus on substantive political issues.
The response followed Nabin’s speech at a gathering in Patna on Saturday, where he accused Gandhi of acting as a “pawn of a foreign toolkit gang” and working against the country’s interests. He also alleged that the Congress was unable to accept India’s progress under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and was attempting to undermine the country’s development.
Karnataka Congress president B.K. Hariprasad said Nabin was echoing statements made by the RSS and challenged the BJP to substantiate its allegations about an alleged foreign-linked toolkit.
“The BJP President, Nitin Nabin, has a habit of simply repeating the remarks given to him by the RSS. If there is a toolkit, let them explain it. Who is stopping them?” Hariprasad told reporters.
He also rejected the suggestion that protecting the Constitution and hoisting the national flag were part of such a campaign, calling the allegation “childish”.
The RJD also joined the criticism, with party Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha questioning Nabin’s approach to political debate and advising him to read more before making allegations against the Opposition.
“Please do a little reading, Nitin Nabin ji. I can name dozens of books that explain how, whenever those in power feel threatened, they look for a foreign hand,” Jha told IANS.
Jha said political leaders should rely on substantive arguments and verifiable information rather than circulating unsubstantiated claims. He also questioned the government’s record on income inequality and the concerns of farmers and labourers.
“WhatsApp forwards will not work. Today, the public fact-checks everything. They can fact-check your statements too and clarify everything within an hour,” he said.
The political exchange comes amid protests by the Congress-led INDIA bloc against the Election Commission of India and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The allegations remain contested.
