Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has termed the reported attack on a Srinagar-bound passenger bus in Haryana “unfortunate” and urged the Haryana government to take strict action against those responsible.
The Chief Minister’s Office said on X that it had taken up the incident with the Haryana government, raising concerns over the safety and well-being of the passengers.
“The Chief Minister’s Office has taken up the unfortunate incident involving a J&K-bound bus with the Government of Haryana, conveying concern for the safety and well-being of the passengers,” the office said.
It added that the Haryana administration had assured prompt and stringent action in accordance with the law. The Jammu and Kashmir government, it said, stood with the affected passengers and was closely monitoring the situation.
Abdullah also shared a video clip of the incident on his X account and called for action to prevent similar attacks in the future.
“This unfortunate incident should never have taken place. I hope the Haryana government led by @NayabSainiBJPji and @police_haryana catch the culprits and take action to ensure these things don’t happen again,” he wrote.
Senior religious leader and chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also expressed concern over the incident, in which an elderly passenger was reportedly injured.
“Disturbed to learn about the attack on a Kashmir-bound bus in Haryana, leaving an elderly passenger injured and others traumatised. Reports of threats against J&K-registered vehicles are causing concern among people,” Mirwaiz Umar said in a post on X.
“Those in authority must ensure the safety of Kashmiri travellers and take swift and strict legal action against those responsible,” he added.
According to reports, a Delhi-Srinagar passenger bus operated by Star World Ventures was attacked with stones and bricks near Kurukshetra in Haryana late on October 17. The incident reportedly left an elderly Kashmiri passenger injured and damaged the vehicle.
The attack allegedly took place at around 10:45 p.m. near Divine Star Dhaba in the Kurukshetra-Karnal region, along the bus’s route to Srinagar.
The bus, registered in Jammu and Kashmir and carrying around 40 passengers, was travelling from Delhi to Srinagar when the incident began. A group of men reportedly arrived in a car during a stop and allegedly abused and assaulted the driver.
The attackers are said to have returned later on motorcycles and pelted the bus with stones and bricks, shattering its windowpanes and injuring an elderly passenger.
According to the reports, the group returned a third time and allegedly threatened that vehicles registered in Jammu and Kashmir would not be allowed to operate in Haryana. A brief confrontation followed, during which police temporarily detained some passengers before releasing them.
The incident has prompted calls from political and religious leaders for the Haryana authorities to ensure the safety of passengers travelling between the two regions and take action against those responsible.
