New Delhi, October 19, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
Punjab FC will aim to build on their winning start to the Indian Super League (ISL) 2026-27 season when they host Mumbai City FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Monday, while the visitors will be seeking their first points after an opening-day defeat.
Punjab began their campaign with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Odisha FC, thanks to Raphael Messi Bouli, who scored in the opening minute and struck again in stoppage time. The win gave head coach Pavlos Dermitzakis three points in his first match in charge.
However, Dermitzakis has cautioned against drawing conclusions from the opening fixture, noting that teams are still developing their identities early in the season.
“There is no advantage for any team,” he said, highlighting the competitive challenge ahead.
Punjab will be keen to make home advantage count before embarking on three consecutive away league fixtures. With limited recovery time between matches, maintaining discipline and managing players’ fitness will be important for the hosts.
Mumbai City, meanwhile, will look to correct the mistakes that led to a 2-1 defeat against Churchill Brothers SC. Despite creating early opportunities, the Islanders struggled to convert their possession into goals before conceding twice in the second half.
Head coach Manolo Marquez remains confident that his team can recover from the setback.
“It’s not how you start, it’s always how you finish the season,” Marquez said.
Defender Carlos Delgado expects a closely contested match and believes Mumbai must be more effective in key moments. He highlighted Punjab’s attacking threat and stressed the importance of winning individual duels, contesting second balls and maintaining defensive organisation.
The fixture also gives Punjab an opportunity to respond to their previous defeat against Mumbai. The Islanders won 2-0 in New Delhi in May, scoring late through Valpuia and Vikram Partap Singh against a Punjab side reduced to nine players.
With Punjab seeking to extend their winning run and Mumbai eager to open their points account, Monday’s contest presents an early test for both teams as they look to establish momentum in the new ISL season.
