Durga Puja celebrations across Bihar have taken on a colourful architectural dimension, with pandals modelled on world-famous landmarks and unusual creative themes attracting thousands of devotees. From towering structures inspired by Malaysia’s Petronas Twin Towers to a cockroach-themed display in Katihar, the installations are drawing attention both on the streets and across social media.
As the nine-day Sharadiya Durga Puja approaches its conclusion, devotional activity has intensified in Patna and neighbouring cities. Drums, cymbals, chants, vibrant lighting and elaborate decorations have transformed neighbourhoods, with organisers expecting larger crowds on Maha Ashtami and Navami.
In Katihar’s Vinodpur area, a pandal featuring giant cockroaches and spider-web decorations has become a talking point. The unusual theme has prompted public curiosity amid political discourse surrounding the so-called “Cockroach Janata Party”. However, organisers have said the concept is fictional and intended to entertain visitors, particularly children, denying any connection with national politics or political commentary.
Patna’s Dakbungalow Square features an approximately 80-foot-tall pandal inspired by the architectural style of the Khajuraho temples in Madhya Pradesh. The structure showcases intricate design elements drawn from the historic temple complex.
In Boring Road, organisers have created a replica of the Farakka Barrage, measuring around 55 feet in height and width. The theme also highlights concerns affecting Bihar, including floods, riverbank erosion and the difficulties faced by farmers.
Another attraction on Boring Canal Road is a pandal standing about 100 feet tall and stretching 150 metres in length. It is decorated with nearly 20,000 bells and houses a 16-foot-tall idol of Goddess Durga.
In Munger district’s Bariarpur block, the Badi Durga Maharani celebrations are drawing visitors to a massive pandal modelled on Malaysia’s Petronas Twin Towers. The structure reportedly stands 250 feet tall.
The varied designs reflect how Durga Puja celebrations combine religious devotion with art, architecture and local creativity. While landmark-inspired structures impress visitors with their scale, unconventional themes are adding fresh talking points to the festivities.
