Misl Satluj Party president Ajaypal Singh Brar has called for a sustained democratic struggle for Punjab’s constitutional rights, natural resources, waters, economic interests and dignity, saying the state must not become a “political pawn” in electoral battles.
In a statement, Brar said Punjab should not be distracted from its core issues by political competition over seats, positions and power. He said the people of Punjab were no longer willing to allow the state’s interests to be compromised for election promises, political speeches or short-term political bargaining.
Brar highlighted Punjab’s contribution to the country’s food security and its role in guarding the national borders, besides its responsibilities during national crises.
“Why, then, does Punjab still have to repeatedly struggle for its legitimate rights?” he asked, describing the issue as a reflection of what he termed the continued neglect and political injustice faced by the state.
He said the Misl Satluj Party had prepared a draft relating to Article 371-L after nearly a year of consultations with legal and constitutional experts. According to Brar, the document is intended as a serious effort to strengthen the constitutional safeguards for Punjab rather than serve as an electoral manifesto or political slogan.
Brar announced that the draft would be presented before the people of Punjab on Punjab Day, November 1, 2026. He said people would be able to examine its provisions, offer their views and decide who should determine the state’s future.
He urged political and social organisations claiming to champion Punjab’s interests to move beyond slogans and clearly spell out their positions on policies, constitutional safeguards and a long-term vision for the state.
Brar said Punjab needed a unifying vision rather than divisive politics, firm guarantees instead of hollow promises and a determined struggle for its future rather than a pursuit of power.
He also warned that any attempt to politically fragment or weaken Punjab would be resisted. The Misl Satluj Party, he said, would continue pursuing the state’s constitutional rights, resources, dignity and future through democratic and peaceful means.
