Punjab records 84 stubble-burning fires; Amritsar accounts for 49 incidents

Punjab has recorded 84 stubble-burning fire incidents so far this paddy harvesting season, with Amritsar accounting for 49 of the reported cases, according to the latest monitoring and enforcement report of the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM).

The report, updated on October 5, said field inspections had been conducted in 78 of the 84 reported incidents. Physical verification during these inspections confirmed crop residue burning at 30 locations across the state.

Environmental compensation (EC) has been imposed in 28 cases, amounting to Rs 1.40 lakh in total, of which Rs 55,000 has been recovered so far. Authorities have also made red entries in farm records in 13 cases and registered one FIR related to stubble burning.

As part of the enforcement drive, nodal and supervisory officers have issued 36 warning and show-cause notices to people linked to the reported incidents.

Amritsar has recorded the highest number of incidents, with 49 cases reported so far. Inspections were conducted in 45 cases and stubble burning was confirmed at 13 locations. Environmental compensation of Rs 55,000 was imposed in 11 cases, with Rs 35,000 recovered. The district also issued 32 warning notices.

Tarn Taran recorded 18 incidents, the second-highest number in the state. Inspections were carried out in 16 cases and burning was confirmed at nine locations. EC of Rs 45,000 was imposed in nine cases, with Rs 10,000 recovered. Red entries were made in nine cases.

Ferozepur reported five incidents, with inspections conducted and crop residue burning confirmed in all five cases. EC of Rs 25,000 was imposed, of which Rs 5,000 was recovered. Red entries were made in four cases.

Patiala reported two incidents, both of which were physically verified as stubble burning. EC of Rs 10,000 was imposed, with no recovery recorded as of October 5. One FIR was also registered in the district.

The latest figures come as Punjab authorities continue enforcement and preventive measures against crop residue burning during the paddy harvesting season, amid concerns over its impact on air quality across the region.
