Actor Sanjay Dutt has issued another clarification over his recent remarks about the diminishing sense of peace in India, saying the comments were part of a scripted segment on Shekhar Suman’s show and did not represent his personal views.
In a video message shared on social media, Dutt said several people had contacted him after the remarks, with some expressing surprise and others strongly disagreeing with what he had said.
He explained that his comments were delivered as part of a scripted television performance.
“Whatever I said in the show was part of a scripted segment,” Dutt said, adding that, as is common with such shows, the participants were performing according to a script and the statements should be understood in that context.
The actor said he respected the feelings of those who had reacted to the comments and did not want a scripted performance to create any misunderstanding about his actual views.
Dutt’s latest clarification follows a statement he posted on Sunday, in which he said it was never his intention to hurt, offend or disrespect the sentiments of any individual, community or institution.
He had explained that his remarks were made in the context of a scripted conversation intended to be light-hearted and humorous. He also drew a comparison with the humour and satire associated with his Munna Bhai films, particularly the concept of “Gandhigiri”, which he said conveyed messages of love, warmth, togetherness and goodwill.
The controversy followed his appearance on the show, where Dutt spoke about India’s people being “lovely”, “large-hearted” and hospitable, while saying that he could no longer feel the same sense of peace in the country.
He had also expressed hope that the situation would improve, saying he prayed to Shivji for those days to return.
In his latest video, Dutt ended his message by expressing hope that his clarification would resolve the misunderstanding, and signed off with “Jai Hind. Jai Bharat.”
