New Delhi, October 3, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
The Delhi Police on Saturday said prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, remain in force across the New Delhi district, adding that no permission has been granted for any protest scheduled for the day.
The restrictions were imposed on Friday ahead of a proposed demonstration at Jantar Mantar against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
In a statement posted on X, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) said the prohibitory orders were intended to ensure public safety, maintain law and order, and facilitate smooth traffic movement.
The police said unauthorised gatherings, public speeches, slogan-shouting, processions, demonstrations, dharnas and other specified activities were prohibited under the order.
“No permission has been granted for any protest scheduled for today, i.e. 03.10.2026, nor has any prior intimation regarding any such protest been received by New Delhi District Police,” the statement said.
The police have urged residents to comply with the restrictions and cooperate with law enforcement authorities, warning that violations would invite legal action.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police have registered at least three FIRs in connection with demonstrations held in the national capital demanding the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
According to officials, two FIRs were registered at Parliament Street police station, while another was lodged at Connaught Place police station. The cases have been registered under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with disobedience of an order duly promulgated by a public servant.
Officials said no individual or organisation had been specifically named as an accused in the FIRs. However, details of organisers and organisations that had proposed or participated in the demonstrations have been included in the case records.
On Friday, police detained more than 1,000 protesters after they allegedly attempted to cross barricades and move towards the designated protest site.
The demonstrations were held amid demands for the CEC’s resignation over allegations concerning the electoral roll revision process. The police have maintained that the restrictions are necessary to prevent unauthorised gatherings and ensure public order in the district.
