Filmmaker Abhishek Pathak, who has directed Drishyam: The Conclusion, has opened up about the challenge of taking forward the popular franchise while retaining its established world and creating an original story.
Pathak said the film required a careful balance because audiences were already familiar with the characters and the events of the first two instalments.
“It is a very complex and nuanced film because there is so much history behind every character. The audience already knows these people and what has happened in Part 1 and Part 2, so every little thing has a meaning,” he said in a statement.
The filmmaker said the writing process involved repeatedly revisiting the earlier films to identify details that could be meaningfully incorporated into the new story.
“Even while writing, we would keep going back to the earlier films, looking at a small dialogue or visual detail and seeing how we could bring it into this story,” he said.
Pathak added that while he wanted audiences to experience the nostalgia of the franchise and recognise its interconnected elements, he was keen to move away from the remake tag.
“I really wanted to write it my own way, take the story ahead in the way I wanted and make my own version of the last part,” he said.
According to Pathak, the team repeatedly challenged the screenplay whenever a plot point appeared predictable, with the aim of keeping the narrative complicated without losing the audience.
Drishyam: The Conclusion is a crime thriller co-written, produced and directed by Pathak. Unlike the previous films, the latest instalment features an original story and is not narratively connected to its Malayalam counterpart.
