Amritsar Rural Police have busted an alleged cross-border arms and explosives supply network with the arrest of a 28-year-old truck driver and the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, nine live cartridges and two hand grenades, Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav said on Sunday.
The accused has been identified as Navjot Singh, a resident of Cheema in Tarn Taran. Police also seized a motorcycle allegedly being used to transport the illegal arms and explosives.
According to DGP Yadav, preliminary investigation indicates that Navjot was allegedly procuring illegal weapons on the directions of smugglers based abroad. He said further investigation was underway to identify the wider network and establish its forward and backward linkages.
IGP Border Range Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said the arrest followed specific intelligence inputs. Acting on the information, special teams of Amritsar Rural Police intercepted Navjot while he was riding a motorcycle.
A subsequent search led to the recovery of the AK-47 along with its magazine and nine live rounds, besides two live hand grenades, Bhullar said.
The operation was conducted under the supervision of SP (Investigation) Ramandeep Singh, DSP Gurinderpal Singh Nagra and DSP Attari Yadwinder Singh, according to SSP Amritsar Rural Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal.
A case has been registered as FIR No. 425, dated September 30, 2026, at Gharinda Police Station under Section 25(8) of the Arms Act and Sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act.
Police said further investigation is in progress to trace the source of the weapons, identify other members of the alleged network and establish its wider linkages.
