Ukraine is prepared to halt certain attacks if Russia agrees to do the same, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said, while stressing that any partial ceasefire must be reliable and sustained.
“If our partners are ready to ensure that Russia genuinely refrains from striking our electricity system, other energy facilities, critical infrastructure, and food supply routes, then, of course, we are ready to ensure a corresponding halt to our strikes,” Zelensky said in a post on X.
He said any limited ceasefire should remain in force for the long term and not be restricted to the period surrounding Russia’s elections scheduled for this month.
Zelensky said ending the conflict remained the ultimate objective and that a de-escalation measure focused on critical infrastructure could serve as an initial step towards peace.
His comments came after US President Donald Trump said Ukraine and Russia had agreed to stop attacks on energy infrastructure. Trump said on Truth Social that Ukraine had agreed not to strike Russian energy targets and that “Russia has agreed to do, likewise!”
The Kremlin welcomed Trump’s call for Ukraine to halt strikes on Russian fuel-producing facilities. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said any appeal to Kyiv to stop attacks on civilian economic infrastructure could only be welcomed.
Peskov also said countries capable of influencing Ukraine could encourage Kyiv to show greater flexibility, which he described as a significant contribution to the settlement process.
Trump had on Sunday urged Zelensky to stop attacks on Russian oil refineries, arguing that such strikes were contributing to diesel shortages.
Meanwhile, Russia has temporarily banned exports of gasoline, diesel, marine fuel and gas oil as part of measures to stabilise its domestic fuel market.
