The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) will honour Sikh student Onkar Singh with a cash award of Rs 51,000 for securing second position in the annual matriculation examinations conducted by the Lahore Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education in Pakistan’s Punjab province.
SGPC Chief Secretary Kulwant Singh Mannan said the decision was taken at a recent meeting of the executive committee on the directions of SGPC president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami.
Mannan said Onkar Singh had earlier also secured second position in his Class 9 examinations and had continued to perform exceptionally well in academics.
He said Onkar’s achievement was particularly significant as the Sikh community is a minority in Pakistan, adding that the accomplishment was a matter of pride for the entire Sikh community.
Onkar Singh’s father, Dr Mimpal Singh, is a member of the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee and has established a reputation in the medical and academic fields. According to Mannan, he is the first Sikh doctor in Pakistan and has been honoured by the Pakistan government with the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz for his services.
Mannan expressed hope that Onkar Singh would continue to excel through his hard work and talent and bring further recognition to the Sikh community.
