Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Monday reiterated that her government would not accept foreign intervention or interference in the country’s internal affairs, stressing that relations with the United States should be based on coordination rather than subordination.
Speaking at her daily press conference, Sheinbaum criticised those advocating foreign intervention, including what she described as some sectors in the United States and members of Mexico’s opposition.
“We will always defend the principle that there should be no intervention, no interference, only coordination, and without subordination,” she said, adding that the position was rooted in Mexico’s history, principles, convictions and Constitution.
Sheinbaum cited an opinion poll showing that 91 per cent of respondents opposed foreign intervention and questioned who benefits from promoting the idea that Mexicans support such involvement. She accused some US groups and right-wing media outlets of pushing the issue, according to Xinhua News Agency.
Separately, Mexico’s proposed economic package for 2027 presents a more realistic macroeconomic outlook by lowering its growth projections, although concerns remain over public debt, the Center for Economic Studies of the Private Sector (CEESP) said.
In its weekly economic analysis, CEESP said the budget proposal submitted to Congress last week revised down growth forecasts for both 2026 and 2027, bringing them closer to projections from financial analysts and national and international institutions.
The business-sector think tank said the revisions reflected a more realistic economic outlook, while cautioning that some assumptions in the proposed budget remained optimistic.
The Mexican government has been pursuing fiscal consolidation, seeking to gradually narrow the deficit and stabilise public debt by limiting its reliance on borrowing to finance government spending.
