The West Bengal Police have arrested two people in connection with the alleged lynching of a 43-year-old man in Howrah district on suspicion of theft, with investigators also probing an alleged attempt to move his body after the assault.
The incident took place late Tuesday night in the Liluah area, while the arrests were made in the early hours of Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Rajkumar Chauhan, a resident of Uttarpara in neighbouring Hooghly district. According to police, Chauhan allegedly entered a factory near Liluah police station on Tuesday night. Local residents claimed he had entered the premises with the intention of stealing and was caught inside.
He was allegedly assaulted by a group of people, and police suspect that he died from injuries sustained in the attack.
Investigators said an attempt was subsequently made to move the body to another location, allegedly to conceal the crime. Following information about the incident, personnel from Liluah police station reached the spot and launched an investigation.
After a preliminary inquiry, police arrested two youths, identified as Shubhjit Patel and Sumit Paswan.
Howrah City Police Commissioner Akhilesh Chaturvedi visited the site and said a murder case had been registered. “Two people have already been arrested. The reason behind the incident is being investigated,” he said.
A forensic team is expected to examine the site and collect evidence, while Chauhan’s body has been sent for an autopsy. Police said the precise circumstances surrounding his death would be established after the forensic and post-mortem reports are received.
The incident triggered tension in the locality. Residents alleged that thefts from factory premises are common in parts of Howrah and Hooghly, with equipment and other materials frequently reported missing. However, locals said an alleged lynching over suspicion of theft was unprecedented in Liluah and demanded strict action against everyone involved.
