US Forces Destroy Five Iranian Oil Tankers Near Kharg Island After Missile Attacks

Washington, September 9, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The US military has destroyed five Iranian crude oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman and near Iran’s Kharg Island after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) allegedly targeted an American warship with ballistic missiles on two occasions, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said.

According to CENTCOM, the strikes were carried out on Tuesday after the US warship successfully evaded both attempted attacks over the preceding two days. No US personnel were injured.

The military identified four tankers destroyed in the Gulf of Oman as M/T Kaviz, M/T Charminar, M/T Horizon 1 and M/T Riesco. A fifth vessel, M/T Derya, was attacked near Kharg Island, a major Iranian oil export hub.

CENTCOM said US forces instructed the tanker crews to abandon the vessels before carrying out strikes that rendered the ships inoperable. No casualties among the crews were reported.

The US command described the tankers as crude oil carriers operated by the IRGC and alleged that they were part of a multibillion-dollar network used to finance the Iranian military organisation and its regional proxies.

CENTCOM did not identify the US warship that Iran allegedly targeted, disclose the locations of the attempted attacks or say how many ballistic missiles were fired.

The latest action came four days after another US operation against Iranian oil carriers. On September 5, CENTCOM said US forces destroyed three Iranian crude oil tankers after the IRGC allegedly attempted to attack a US aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer.

Kharg Island, located in the Persian Gulf, has historically been a key terminal for Iran’s seaborne crude oil exports. The escalation of military activity around the island has raised concerns over commercial shipping and energy supplies in the region.

A prolonged disruption to shipping could increase tanker insurance and freight costs and put upward pressure on global crude prices, potentially affecting major oil importers such as India.
