The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has expanded its probe into the alleged attack on its officials during a search operation at the residence of Kerala Leader of Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan by registering a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
The move brings the CPI(M) and its leaders under fresh scrutiny, with the central agency examining whether a financial trail was linked to the alleged attack.
According to sources, the ED is investigating whether individuals were mobilised for the incident using funds allegedly received from persons or companies already under investigation. It will also examine whether financial assistance was provided to those accused and whether such transactions could constitute proceeds of crime under the anti-money laundering law.
The agency is also expected to examine the alleged conspiracy behind the incident, including the role of political leaders who were present at the spot. Invoking the PMLA in connection with an alleged attack on officials is an unusual step and could substantially broaden the investigation.
The development comes as Kerala Police prepare to file the first charge sheet in the case. The investigation, led by Cantonment ACP Jayachandran, has named 28 CPI(M), DYFI and SFI functionaries as accused. Reports indicate that the initial charge sheet may not extensively deal with the alleged political conspiracy.
The incident occurred in the last week of May when an ED team reached Vijayan’s residence as part of its investigation into the alleged monthly-payment case involving his daughter, T. Veena. Party activists allegedly gathered outside the residence to obstruct the search, during which ED officials were allegedly attacked and their vehicle damaged.
The latest action follows the ED’s earlier demand for proceedings under the Prevention of Corruption Act against Vijayan, Veena and former minister Mohammed Riyas in connection with the monthly-payment case. The agency has alleged that CMRL made payments worth several crores.
With the ED pursuing both the alleged financial irregularities and the attack on its officials, the CPI(M) faces scrutiny on two parallel fronts.
