Premji Invest CEO and Managing Partner TK Kurien on Wednesday said the investment firm was delighted to partner with the Adani Group to support the next phase of growth in India’s aviation sector.
Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL), has announced plans to raise Rs 9,825 crore ($1 billion) in primary equity capital from a consortium of global investors, including Premji Invest.
Kurien said the Indian aviation sector was at a “pivotal inflection point”, driven by structural factors such as a young population, an aspirational consumer base and progressive government policies.
“This investment reaffirms Premji Invest’s commitment to partnering with industry leaders towards developing critical nation-building infrastructure,” he said.
The transaction values AAHL at a pre-money equity valuation of $18 billion. The funds will be used to expand and modernise airport infrastructure, accelerate the development of integrated Adani Airport City ecosystems, and scale passenger-facing and other non-aeronautical businesses, including ground handling.
The first phase of the Airport City development plans envisages 22 million square feet of mixed-use development around AAHL’s airports.
According to Adani Airports, the investment is expected to help increase the network’s capacity to serve 200 million passengers annually, strengthen commercial monetisation, improve passenger experience and further develop its integrated airport ecosystem.
AAHL currently manages eight airports across India and handles more than 23 per cent of the country’s total passenger traffic.
Following the announcement, shares of Adani Enterprises opened higher on the NSE and gained more than 6.5 per cent to touch an intraday high of Rs 3,137.10, compared with the opening price of Rs 2,959.90.
