Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) is expanding international passenger-handling capacity at Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit scheduled in New Delhi, officials said on Wednesday.
The expansion is aimed at managing a possible increase in international air traffic during the summit. As part of the preparations, Pier C at Terminal 3 will be progressively opened for international flight operations from the night of September 9 after completion of required security and operational checks and approvals.
The facility will initially handle international arrivals. From the evening of September 10, it is expected to accommodate both international arrivals and departures, providing additional capacity and operational flexibility during the summit.
Once fully operational, the expansion will increase the airport’s annual international passenger-handling capacity by 50 per cent to 31 million passengers per annum (MPPA), according to officials.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Traffic Police has urged citizens and cab service providers to follow traffic advisories issued for routes where movement will be restricted during the summit.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dinesh Kumar Gupta said traffic arrangements had been put in place and rehearsals were being conducted to ensure smooth movement of dignitaries.
“The BRICS Summit will be held in India on September 11, 12 and 13. Delhi Traffic Police has its detailed traffic arrangements in place for this. We are conducting rehearsals under these arrangements,” Gupta said.
He said the rehearsals were intended to familiarise personnel with the arrangements and minimise difficulties during the movement of dignitaries.
Traffic advisories are being disseminated through the Delhi Police website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and print media, Gupta said, adding that 22 diversion points had been established. Personnel have also been briefed to guide commuters on alternative routes.
To reduce traffic-related inconvenience, all Central and state government offices and schools in Delhi will remain closed on September 11.
