India will continue supporting Nepal’s relief, rescue and reconstruction efforts following the devastating flash floods, with assistance being extended according to the requirements on the ground, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Tuesday.
Addressing the bi-weekly media briefing in New Delhi, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India has so far dispatched 95 tonnes of relief material to Nepal through seven aircraft. India has also deployed forensic and tunnel rescue teams to assist local authorities in relief and rescue operations.
“We have expressed solidarity and sympathy with the people and government of Nepal, and we are doing our best to help them in this particular disaster. As a close friend and neighbour, India has responded promptly and will continue to support Nepal’s relief, rescue, and reconstruction efforts,” Jaiswal said.
He said additional relief material would be sent soon, while Indian forensic and tunnel rescue teams were already operating on the ground.
The forensic team is working in two laboratories in Kathmandu and is examining 1,200 DNA samples as part of efforts to identify victims and assist families.
Jaiswal also provided an update on Indian nationals affected by the disaster. He said 275 Indian nationals remained missing, while 169 had been rescued. The figure of 275 missing Indians also includes 49 people who went missing on the Chinese side, he said.
The MEA spokesperson said the Indian government had taken several measures to assist its citizens after the disaster, including setting up round-the-clock control rooms in India, Beijing and Kathmandu.
He said the teams managing these control rooms had been working continuously to assist Indian nationals and ensure their safety and welfare, while acknowledging that some cases may have fallen short of expectations.
“We have tried our best, but still some elements would have been short of expectations. But let me tell you that it has been our desire to do our best for our people, and we remain committed to their welfare, safety, and their wellbeing,” Jaiswal said.
The massive flood that struck Nepal’s Rasuwa on August 26 originated in the Tibetan region of China and swept through the transboundary Bhote Koshi River. The disaster caused widespread destruction across Nepal and left more than 1,000 people dead, including foreign nationals.
