Former Delhi Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta, 74, died by suicide at his residence in Noida, with police recovering a note that reportedly cited health and mental health issues as the reason for the extreme step.
According to police, Mehta’s body was found at his residence on September 6, while his last rites were performed on Sunday. The case is being treated as suicide based on the circumstances and the note recovered from the premises. Further formalities are being completed as per procedure.
A 1975-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, Mehta had a long association with the Delhi administration and served in several capacities during the tenure of former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
Before becoming Chief Secretary, Mehta served as Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, where he handled a range of civic and administrative responsibilities in the national capital.
He took charge as Delhi Chief Secretary in 2007 and remained in the post for more than three years. During his tenure, he was involved in the planning and implementation of major projects related to transport, power and civic infrastructure.
His tenure also coincided with preparations for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. The event involved extensive coordination among various departments of the Delhi government, with Mehta playing a key role in the administrative machinery during the period.
Those familiar with his career remembered him as a senior administrator who spent a significant part of his professional life serving Delhi.
The police investigation and other formal procedures are underway.
