The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) JNU unit staged a protest on the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus on Monday and burnt effigies of the university’s Internal Committee (IC) and a professor accused of sexual harassment, alleging that the proceedings in the case were being delayed due to political influence.
According to an ABVP press release, several female students have filed complaints alleging sexual harassment against a JNU professor who is also a Congress MP. The complaints have been submitted to the university’s Internal Committee and the matter is currently under process.
ABVP alleged that despite the seriousness of the complaints, no concrete action had been taken so far. The student organisation claimed that the professor was being shielded because of his political affiliation and questioned whether his position as a Congress MP was influencing the proceedings.
The ABVP also accused left-affiliated representatives on the Internal Committee of delaying hearings under alleged political pressure from their leadership.
ABVP JNU President Mayank Panchal said the alleged lack of prompt action on complaints filed by female students exposed what he described as the “true face” of the Left-dominated Internal Committee and left-wing organisations on campus.
He further alleged that activists associated with left groups had faced sexual harassment allegations in the past but continued to remain active.
ABVP JNU Minister Praveen Kumar Piyush demanded the resignation of the left-affiliated representatives elected to the Internal Committee, calling them “incapable”. He alleged that in a recent complaint involving an AISF cadre, the representatives had failed to attend any of the hearings.
The organisation said any attempt to influence or unnecessarily delay an investigation or hearing into sexual harassment complaints, whether by an individual, organisation or political pressure, would be a serious concern.
ABVP maintained that representatives who claim to champion women’s rights should ensure that complainants receive due protection and that such cases are dealt with promptly and fairly.
