Former IPS officer Kiran Bedi has raised concerns over Delhi’s growing problem of unauthorised construction, structurally unsafe buildings and alleged corruption in the real estate sector following the recent building collapse in Satya Niketan.
In a post on X, Bedi described her comments as “an open insight” into the challenges facing the national Capital. She said Delhi had expanded rapidly, but alleged that much of the growth had taken place through unauthorised construction and corruption.
Bedi pointed to the large number of unauthorised colonies and buildings across the city, saying the scope for legal and planned real estate development remained constrained by what she described as vested interests and a “rotten regulatory system”.
She argued that weak and unsafe buildings were a consequence of distortions in the real estate market and stressed that the shortage of safe accommodation extended beyond student housing to residential and other categories of buildings.
Recalling the Lalita Park building collapse nearly two decades ago, Bedi warned about the potentially devastating consequences of a major earthquake in Delhi.
“God forbid if an earthquake of significant magnitude strikes, it will expose the system at a massive scale,” she said.
Bedi also questioned whether the proposed building safety audits would bring meaningful change, warning that action could remain limited to a few structures while alleged extortion practices continued.
She called for a fair investigation into alleged corruption linked to real estate development and suggested that the assets and wealth of politicians, officials and others connected with the sector should be examined.
Her remarks come amid renewed scrutiny of building safety and unauthorised constructions in Delhi following the Satya Niketan tragedy.
