Justice Ravindra Vithalrao Ghuge was sworn in as the 45th Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court at a formal ceremony held on the court premises here on Wednesday.
West Bengal Governor R.N. Ravi administered the oath of office to Justice Ghuge in the presence of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, Assembly Speaker Rathindra Bose, senior members of the state Cabinet and serving and former judges of various High Courts.
His appointment fills the permanent vacancy created following the retirement of former Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam. In the interim, Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty had served as Acting Chief Justice and handled the judicial responsibilities of the High Court.
The Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, recommended Justice Ghuge’s appointment as the permanent Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court on August 6. The Union government cleared the appointment on September 5.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal also announced the appointment on X, stating that the President, in consultation with the Chief Justice of India, had consented to Justice Ghuge’s appointment under the powers conferred by the Constitution.
Justice Ghuge began his legal career as an advocate in 1990 and has appeared in more than 2,000 cases, many of them representing labour unions. He has also represented industrial organisations and multinational companies.
He served as a contributory professor for the postgraduate LL.M course at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University from 2005 to 2008. He was secretary of the Bar Association of Industrial Lawyers, Aurangabad, for five years and served as its president from July 2010 to December 2011.
Justice Ghuge entered the judiciary in June 2013 when he was appointed an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court. He became a permanent judge in March 2016 and was appointed Acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court in June 2026.
His elevation to the Calcutta High Court marks the latest chapter in a judicial career spanning more than a decade.
