Two Imposters Held With Gun Hours Before PM Modi’s Mumbai Event, Security Breach Suspected

Mumbai, September 8, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Mumbai Police arrested two persons, including one carrying a gun, hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to inaugurate the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026 in Mumbai on Tuesday, after they allegedly posed as a PMO official and his bodyguard, officials said.

The two men were detained after their suspicious movements around the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) at Bandra Kurla Complex, the venue for the fintech conference, raised concerns among security personnel.

According to police, 24-year-old Rohan Parekh was carrying a purported PMO identity card, while the other man was posing as his armed “bodyguard”. The security personnel were alerted after Parekh’s identity documents were found to be fake.

The Mumbai Crime Branch subsequently confirmed that the PMO identity card was forged, following which a security alarm was sounded. Security arrangements were immediately strengthened at the venue and across Mumbai, including at the airport, after senior officers assessed the seriousness of the alleged breach.

Sources said the Crime Branch seized the mobile phones of both accused and launched an investigation, including an examination of their Call Detail Records (CDRs), to determine whether other people were involved in the alleged security breach.

The two were also questioned about their purpose in entering the high-security venue with a fake identity card. Police were investigating whether the incident was part of a larger criminal conspiracy targeting the Prime Minister’s security arrangements.

Prime Minister Modi was scheduled to inaugurate the four-day GFF 2026 on Tuesday evening. The seventh edition of the conference will conclude on September 11.

Since 2020, the Global Fintech Fest has developed into an international thought-leadership platform bringing together policymakers, regulators, central banks, financial institutions, fintech companies, technology firms, investors, academia and other global stakeholders to discuss the future of finance.

The theme of GFF 2026 is “Potential to Impact: Agentic AI, Tokenisation, Quantum – Trusted, Connected, Global Systems for Inclusive Finance.”

According to a statement, discussions at this year’s conference will focus on how Agentic AI, programmable finance, quantum technologies and other emerging technologies can generate trusted, inclusive and measurable outcomes for citizens, enterprises and economies worldwide.
