An Additional District and Sessions Court in Chhattisgarh’s Kanker district has sentenced five Maoists, including senior North Bastar Maoist leader Prabhakar and his wife Raje Kange, in connection with a 2015 attack on security forces.
Prabhakar, a cadre of the Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee (DKSZC), and Raje Kange, who was associated with the Divisional Committee Member (DVCM) rank, were each awarded seven years of imprisonment. The three other accused were sentenced to five years each.
The case relates to an attack by Maoists on a security forces team conducting a search operation in the Korar region in 2015. Following the incident, police registered a case against Prabhakar, Raje Kange and their associates.
The two remained absconding for several years before Prabhakar was arrested in 2024. His wife was taken into custody soon afterwards. Police subsequently conducted an extensive investigation and filed a detailed chargesheet before the court, supported by evidence concerning their alleged involvement in the incident.
Police officials said Prabhakar and Raje Kange are facing nearly 60 criminal cases between them. The Chhattisgarh government had announced a reward of Rs 25 lakh for information leading to Prabhakar’s arrest and Rs 8 lakh for his wife.
During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence establishing the presence and active involvement of the two accused in the Korar attack. The court subsequently held all five accused guilty and pronounced the sentences.
Officials described the verdict as significant, saying it marks the first instance of a high-ranking Maoist cadre from the region being convicted and sentenced after a substantial decline in Maoist activities in the area.
The judgment is expected to strengthen the legal proceedings against remaining Maoist elements and reinforce the message that those involved in attacks on security forces will face legal action through the judicial process.
