Gujarat BJP in-charge Tarun Chugh on Wednesday accused the Congress-led UPA government of leaving India grappling with corruption, misgovernance and terrorism between 2004 and 2014, while crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership since 2014 with putting the country on a path of development and good governance.
Chugh was addressing a BJP state-level workshop in Gandhinagar ahead of the party’s month-long ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’, scheduled from September 17 to October 17 to mark Modi completing 25 uninterrupted years as head of a government, first as Gujarat Chief Minister and later as Prime Minister.
Referring to the 2004-2014 period, Chugh said the country had been “in a state of helplessness” amid corruption, misgovernance and terrorism, creating an atmosphere of disappointment and frustration.
He said Gujarat gave the country a “strong, decisive and farsighted leader” in Modi in 2014, when voters elected a full-majority government after three decades. Chugh said the results of that change were visible in India’s economic and developmental progress.
Chugh claimed that India had made “unprecedented progress” across sectors over the past 12 years, moving from the world’s 11th-largest economy to the fourth-largest. He also described India as the fastest-growing major economy and cited a growth rate of 7.8 per cent despite global conflicts affecting several economies.
“This is the new India,” Chugh said while referring to the country’s response to terrorism. He claimed that India was now giving a “befitting response” to terrorist attacks and conducting operations against terrorists across the border.
He attributed India’s progress amid global challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic and wars, to Modi’s leadership and diplomacy.
Chugh also highlighted welfare and development initiatives aimed at poor people, farmers, youth and women, saying the government had addressed several long-standing issues and advanced the country’s development, governance, security and welfare.
Referring to Gujarat, Chugh said Modi, after becoming Chief Minister in 2001, had worked on issues involving electricity, water and roads, helping transform the state into a leader across sectors and a symbol of peace, security and development.
He said the “Gujarat Model” generated confidence across the country and contributed to Modi securing a historic mandate as Prime Minister.
Chugh also said Modi was working to place India’s interests first while showcasing the country’s culture and heritage internationally.
The workshop was chaired by Gujarat BJP president Jagdish Vishwakarma and attended by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, BJP national Seva Sankalp Abhiyan zone in-charge Ashish Shelar and state organisation general secretary Ratnakar, among others.
Chugh also guided party workers on organising public participation programmes during the month-long campaign marking Modi’s “25 years of service and dedication”.
