Megastar Amitabh Bachchan took a nostalgic trip down memory lane on the sets of Kaun Banega Crorepati, recalling the time he first heard playback singer Sunidhi Chauhan perform as a child.
Bachchan remembered Chauhan as a young singing prodigy and said he had heard her perform at the music room of veteran composer duo Kalyanji-Anandji, where he would often spend time late into the night.
“Many people don’t know this, but we have been listening to her since she was very small,” Bachchan said, recalling how the young singer would perform at the composers’ music room. He praised her voice and described her as being very young at the time.
The veteran actor also recalled sharing the stage with Chauhan during an international performance at London’s Wembley Stadium. He said the event attracted an audience of around 80,000 to 90,000 people.
Bachchan said Kalyanji and Anandji had asked both him and the young Chauhan to perform during an overseas show. He jokingly recalled being apprehensive about singing live alongside the talented child singer.
“I said, ‘Look, my voice sounds like a broken bamboo, where are you taking me? The audience won’t stay!’” he recalled.
Bachchan said the performers were called for regular rehearsals and that he would practise and sing alongside Chauhan.
Recalling the Wembley performance, he said Chauhan’s singing left the audience amazed and drew tremendous applause. He said people were unable to understand how such a young child could sing with such maturity.
“When she started singing, the applause she received and the honour she received cannot be described,” Bachchan said, recalling the overwhelming response to the young singer.
The recollection highlighted Chauhan’s early emergence as a gifted performer and her long association with the Hindi film music industry.
