Delhi Health Minister Dr Pankaj Singh has called a high-level meeting on Monday to review the national capital’s preparedness to prevent and control H1N1 (swine flu) and other seasonal and vector-borne diseases amid a rise in influenza cases.
The meeting is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Delhi Secretariat and will be attended by senior Health Department officials. The minister is expected to review the prevailing disease situation, hospital preparedness, surveillance mechanisms and measures being taken to contain the spread of infections.
The meeting will focus particularly on H1N1, dengue, malaria and chikungunya. Officials are expected to brief Singh on the latest disease data and field-level surveillance, while the minister may issue directions to strengthen preparedness in view of the monsoon season.
Delhi recorded 159 fresh influenza cases on August 20, including 114 H1N1 cases, taking the cumulative H1N1 tally in 2026 to 1,777. Influenza A cases have risen to 2,392.
The capital has reported 2,602 influenza cases so far this year, comprising 2,392 Influenza A and 210 Influenza B cases. Four new Influenza B cases were reported on August 20.
Meanwhile, Safdarjung Hospital said it is equipped to manage patients with H1N1 influenza and other seasonal illnesses, with medicines, treatment facilities and supportive care available.
H1N1 is a subtype of Influenza A that causes respiratory illness. Common symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, headache, body aches, fatigue and a runny or blocked nose. While most people recover within days to about a week, influenza can cause serious complications, particularly among older adults, young children, pregnant women and people with certain underlying health conditions.
Health authorities advise people to maintain hand hygiene, cover coughs and sneezes, avoid close contact with infected individuals and consider seasonal influenza vaccination, particularly for those at higher risk of complications.
