Television actor Aabhaas Mehta, known for shows such as Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?, Tu Sooraj Main Saanjh Piyaji and Hum Rahein Na Rahein Hum, has joined the cast of the mythological series Hastinapur Ke Veer, where he will portray King Jarasandha.
Mehta said it was the show’s connection with the Mahabharata that initially attracted him rather than the character itself.
“Yes, I have just joined the show Hastinapur Ke Veer and I am playing the character of King Jarasandha. What drew me to this character? I would be a liar if I say that I was drawn to the character because honestly I had zero idea about the story, about this character,” he said.
The actor said he saw the series as an opportunity to be part of an epic Mahabharata-based story, something he had not explored earlier in his career.
Mehta has previously appeared in several mythological productions, beginning with Devon Ke Dev…Mahadev. He subsequently featured in Sinhasan Battisi as Betal, Mahakali – Anth Hi Aarambh Hai and Lakshmi Narayan – Sukh Samarthya Santulan.
Reflecting on his association with the genre, Mehta said mythological shows offer actors a wider canvas to explore larger-than-life characters.
“The one thing I love about mythological shows is that it gives you a much larger scope to perform because obviously these are myths,” he said.
However, he acknowledged that such roles also carry significant responsibility because audiences are familiar with the stories through literature, television, films and other forms of popular culture.
“You have to be very honest with your writing in this so that you don’t sway from the game. And you have to make sure you don’t hurt anybody’s sentiments,” he said.
For his portrayal of Jarasandha, Mehta said he researched extensively about the character and his historical and mythological references.
“How I have prepared for this role is researched a lot about the king and as much as I could I have read about him,” he said, adding that he was bringing a new element to the character that he would reveal through the show.
The actor also appealed to viewers to support his new role, saying he hoped to do justice to the character.
The series premiered on June 2, 2026, and explores the formative childhood years, relationships and rivalries of the Pandavas and Kauravas before the events of the Mahabharata war. Hastinapur Ke Veer airs on Sony SAB.
