Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Wednesday paid obeisance at Mastuana Sahib and joined the Sangat at a Kirtan Darbar organised to mark the 650th Parkash Purab of Sri Guru Ravidass Ji Maharaj, asserting that his government is committed to promoting the Guru’s message of equality, dignity and universal brotherhood.
Addressing the gathering, Mann said the Punjab government has earmarked ₹100 crore for grand celebrations of the 650th Parkash Purab across the state and is working to take the life, philosophy and teachings of Sri Guru Ravidass Ji Maharaj to every household.
He said Guru Ravidass Ji Maharaj raised his voice against caste discrimination and social inequality and envisioned a society based on equality, compassion and human dignity. Mann said the teachings of the revered saint continue to inspire the government in its efforts to build an egalitarian society.
“The primary objective of this event is to spread Guru Sahib’s sacred message of social equality and devotion to the Almighty among the people,” Mann said, adding that the celebrations would also help connect the younger generation with the Guru’s teachings.
The Chief Minister said his government was committed to the welfare of weaker and underprivileged sections of society and would continue working to ensure that every person lived with self-respect and dignity.
Referring to the Bhakti movement, Mann said Sri Guru Ravidass Ji Maharaj emerged as a powerful voice against forces that sought to divide society on the basis of caste and status. Through his Bani, he envisioned a society free from pain, deprivation and discrimination, he said.
Mann also asserted that divisive forces had repeatedly failed to weaken Punjab’s social fabric.
“Punjab is a sacred land of great Gurus, saints and seers who have shown us the path of mutual love and tolerance,” he said, adding that Punjabis had strong bonds of brotherhood and celebrated festivals together irrespective of religious differences.
He said attempts to disturb communal harmony in Punjab had proved futile and would not succeed in the future either.
The Chief Minister also recalled the state government’s commemoration of the 350th Shaheedi Diwas of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, including a special session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha at Sri Anandpur Sahib.
Cabinet Minister Harpal Singh Cheema and other dignitaries were present at the programme.
