Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has transformed public procurement in India by promoting transparent processes, wider participation and greater opportunities for businesses.
Modi made the remarks in a post on X while sharing an article by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal highlighting the progress of the GeM platform since its launch on August 9, 2016.
“Transparent procurement, wider participation and better opportunities… This is how @GeM_India is transforming public procurement,” the Prime Minister said.
Highlighting the role of technology, Modi said GeM had strengthened the ease of doing business over the past decade by creating a more competitive and inclusive procurement ecosystem.
He particularly underlined the platform’s role in providing opportunities to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and women entrepreneurs.
“With technology at its core, the GeM platform has strengthened ‘Ease of Doing Business’ over the last 10 years by creating a more competitive and inclusive ecosystem, particularly empowering MSMEs and women entrepreneurs,” Modi said.
The Prime Minister also encouraged people to read Goyal’s article for a detailed understanding of GeM’s achievements and its contribution to modernising public procurement.
GeM was launched to digitise procurement by government departments and public sector institutions. The online marketplace enables government buyers and registered sellers to conduct procurement through a digital platform designed to improve transparency and efficiency.
The platform has also emerged as an important tool for widening business participation in government procurement, while helping reduce procedural bottlenecks and improve access to opportunities for enterprises across the country.
