Former world champion PV Sindhu has backed the efforts being made to keep monkeys away from the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium Complex ahead of the BWF World Championships 2026, saying the unusual solution reflects the work being done behind the scenes to prepare Delhi for the global event.
Reports that the Badminton Association of India (BAI) plans to deploy people to imitate langur calls to deter rhesus macaques at the venue have triggered amusement and criticism on social media.
Sindhu, however, urged people to look beyond the novelty of the measure and appreciate the effort involved in ensuring a smooth tournament.
“You can laugh at the solution, but you have to love the effort. So many people are working behind the scenes to make sure India is ready to welcome the world. Our solutions may be uniquely Indian, but so are our warmth, our spirit and our hospitality,” Sindhu wrote in a social media post.
“Can’t wait for the badminton world to experience it all in Delhi. See you soon!” she added.
The BAI has reportedly engaged three people with expertise in imitating langur calls to discourage rhesus macaques from entering the stadium complex. Rhesus macaques are known to avoid areas inhabited by langurs, which are natural predators and threats to them.
The move follows incidents at the India Open in New Delhi last year, when monkeys entered the designated training area and disrupted preparations.
Langurs have also been used for years to deter monkeys from government offices and other important installations in the national capital.
The BWF World Championships will be held in New Delhi from August 17 to 23, bringing the world’s leading badminton players to India. The BAI has faced criticism over several aspects of the tournament’s organisation and is seeking to ensure that logistical and venue-related issues do not disrupt the competition.
