Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faced protests in North Kolkata on Tuesday when BJP supporters raised “go back” and “thief” slogans as she was leaving Shyambazar after paying tribute to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
The protest came two days after Banerjee faced demonstrations in Kanchrapara, North 24 Parganas, while visiting the family of a Trinamool Congress worker who allegedly died in police custody. During Sunday’s incident, demonstrators had surrounded her vehicle and thrown mud and a torn slipper towards it while raising slogans against her.
Tuesday’s protest at Shyambazar was comparatively restrained. Banerjee arrived at the five-point crossing to garland Netaji’s statue, and the ceremony took place without disruption.
After paying tribute, Banerjee launched a sharp attack on the BJP, accusing the party of insulting legendary freedom fighters, including Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
As she prepared to leave, BJP activists gathered at the spot and raised slogans against her. The situation briefly became tense before a large police contingent intervened and brought it under control. Banerjee subsequently left the area.
A BJP supporter defending the protest said the demonstrators had not raised slogans while Banerjee was paying tribute to Netaji and had only shouted “thief” slogans afterwards.
The latest incident follows Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s statement on Monday that there would be no compromise on Banerjee’s security. He said adequate arrangements would be made if she informed the police about her visits in advance.
