The BJP on Tuesday called a statewide bandh in Jharkhand to protest the alleged police action against JPSC-JSSC aspirants during their demonstration over irregularities in recruitment examinations in Ranchi.
BJP workers took to the streets in Ranchi, Hazaribagh, Palamu, Giridih and Chatra, blocking roads at several locations. At Harmu Chowk in Ranchi, protesters reportedly blocked the road by burning tyres and raised slogans against the state government.
In Palamu, BJP workers staged demonstrations and blocked roads at Chhahmuhan and Redma Chowk in Daltonganj. Party district president Amit Tiwari accused the government of putting the future of the state’s youth at risk.
In Simdega, protesters blocked National Highway-143 at multiple points, including Biru, while road blockades were also reported from Dhanwar in Giridih and Pratappur in Chatra.
Ranchi Mahanagar BJP president Varun Sahu said the bandh was called against the use of lathis, tear gas and other force against protesting students. He also alleged that protesters were beaten during the night.
Police were deployed at major intersections and surveillance was intensified to maintain law and order.
The bandh followed Monday’s confrontation between thousands of recruitment-exam aspirants and police near the Jharkhand Assembly. Protesters demanding cancellation of the examinations and an independent probe allegedly breached several barricades despite heavy security. Police used water cannons, tear gas and lathi charges to stop them.
While protesters claimed several people, including women, were injured, Ranchi City SP Paras Rana said four policemen were injured in stone-pelting.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren appealed for peace and assured the aspirants that their concerns would be addressed with “seriousness and sensitivity”. He said the government was working towards a more transparent, technology-driven, secure and accountable examination system.
Meanwhile, student activist Devendra Nath Mahto, who had been on a nine-day hunger strike, was hospitalised after his health deteriorated.
