India on Tuesday said it was examining Bangladesh’s request for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in accordance with established procedures, reiterating that New Delhi’s position on the matter remained unchanged.
Addressing the Ministry of External Affairs’ (MEA) bi-weekly media briefing, spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the extradition request was under examination through the processes followed by India.
“Our position has been very clear on this particular matter: that we are looking into the case as per established processes that we have on our side,” Jaiswal said.
He also said investigations were continuing into the case involving suspects in the killing of Bangladeshi radical Islamist leader Sharif Osman Hadi, describing it as a legal matter.
The remarks came a day after Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi met Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in Dhaka. According to a statement issued by the Bangladeshi Prime Minister’s Press Wing, Rahman and Trivedi discussed several issues, including Hasina’s extradition. Bangladesh expressed hope that India would expedite the process.
Dhaka has also sought the return of individuals allegedly involved in Hadi’s murder. Hadi was shot in the head on December 12 last year when assailants allegedly fired at the rickshaw he was travelling in on Paltan Road in Dhaka. He was subsequently taken to Singapore for treatment but died on December 18.
The Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata had earlier said Kolkata Police informed it about the arrest of Bangladeshi nationals Faisal Karim Masud, 37, and Alamgir Hossain, 34, who Indian media had identified as suspects in the Hadi murder case. The mission said it had sought consular access.
Meanwhile, Trivedi described his meeting with Rahman as “fruitful”. The Indian High Commission said the two sides discussed matters of mutual interest and ways to strengthen bilateral ties through a people-centric approach. Trivedi also conveyed India’s intention to work with Bangladesh and its people in a positive, constructive and forward-looking manner.
