Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon on Tuesday accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal of engaging in political theatrics instead of participating in parliamentary debates on issues concerning the country.
Dhillon said Parliament was in session and Rahul Gandhi should raise his questions inside the House rather than create disruptions outside it. He said parliamentary time and public money were valuable and alleged that repeated disruptions reflected irresponsible politics.
Referring to the ongoing political confrontation in Parliament, Dhillon said Rahul Gandhi had repeatedly sought answers from Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He claimed that Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju had made it clear that Shah was ready to answer questions on issues raised by the Opposition.
Despite this, Dhillon alleged, the Congress walked out of the House instead of participating in the debate. He said the development showed that the Congress was more interested in political confrontation than finding solutions to public issues.
Dhillon also expressed concern over the police action during the students’ protest in Ranchi, Jharkhand. He said reports of the use of barbed wire, tear gas, water cannons and lathi-charge against students seeking to raise concerns over employment and recruitment were worrying.
Questioning the silence of Rahul Gandhi and Kejriwal over the incident, Dhillon said Jharkhand has a coalition government involving the Congress and alleged that the Opposition was applying “double standards” by raising students’ issues selectively for political purposes.
He also criticised the AAP government in Punjab, alleging that youth, employees, farmers, labourers and teachers demanding their rights had faced the use of force. Dhillon further referred to alleged paper leaks in Punjab and said such issues raised concerns about the future of young people and the credibility of government recruitment.
Dhillon said the Opposition had every right to question and criticise the government but also had a responsibility to participate in constructive parliamentary debate on issues related to public welfare and national development.
He said the BJP stood with the protesting students of Jharkhand and would oppose attempts to suppress their voice. Dhillon also challenged Rahul Gandhi to participate in parliamentary debate and speak on the police action against students in Ranchi.
