The Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed the National Co-operative Development Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026, by voice vote amid continued sloganeering by Opposition members before the House was adjourned for the day.
Minister of State for Cooperation Murlidhar Mohol introduced the NCDC Amendment Bill on behalf of Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah.
The legislation seeks to amend the National Co-operative Development Corporation Act, 1962, with the stated objective of making funding for cooperative societies faster and more flexible.
The Bill also proposes to expand the role of the National Co-operative Development Corporation (NCDC), a statutory body under the Ministry of Cooperation responsible for financing and promoting cooperative societies, in supporting cooperative sectors across the country.
Krishna Prasad Tenneti, who was presiding over the proceedings, repeatedly appealed to Opposition members to allow the House to function smoothly. However, protests and sloganeering continued, following which the NCDC Bill was passed without a division.
The Lok Sabha subsequently took up the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026, which seeks to change the official name of the state from Kerala to ‘Keralam’.
Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai introduced the Bill amid Opposition protests. The protesting MPs were demanding the presence of Home Minister Amit Shah and a statement on the police action against NEET protesters on July 20.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and Nityanand Rai criticised the Opposition for not participating in the discussion on the proposed renaming of Kerala.
Rijiju said it was unfortunate that even senior Congress leaders, including K.C. Venugopal, were not speaking on the legislation.
With the protests continuing, the Kerala renaming Bill was also passed by voice vote without discussion.
The House was later adjourned for the day.
