India Expands LNG Import Sources from 6 to 15 Amid West Asia Crisis

New Delhi, August 10, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

India has significantly diversified its energy import sources amid heightened geopolitical uncertainty in West Asia, expanding the number of countries supplying liquefied natural gas (LNG) from six to 15, the government informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

The country has also increased the number of crude oil supplier countries from 27 to 41, aimed at reducing exposure to disruptions in any particular market, region or transit route.

Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi said in a written reply that the diversification had strengthened India’s ability to deal with supply disruptions and volatility in global energy markets.

He said the government regularly monitors risks to energy supplies and assesses global market conditions in coordination with public-sector oil and gas companies and other stakeholders. Measures are taken as necessary to ensure uninterrupted supplies of crude oil, LNG and petroleum products.

India imports more than 85 per cent of its crude oil requirements, making diversification of supply sources particularly important amid geopolitical tensions and volatility in international energy markets.

The government is also strengthening the country’s strategic petroleum reserves to improve its ability to withstand supply shocks and sharp fluctuations in crude oil prices.

Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserve Ltd (ISPRL) has established three strategic petroleum reserve facilities with a combined capacity of 5.33 million metric tonnes (MMT) at coastal locations in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The stored crude can be supplied to public-sector refineries during periods of extreme market volatility.

In addition, the government approved two commercial-cum-strategic petroleum reserve facilities with a combined capacity of 6.5 MMT at Chandikhol in Odisha and Padur in Karnataka. The projects were approved in July 2021.

The measures are aimed at strengthening India’s energy security by combining diversified imports with greater domestic capacity to cushion the impact of global supply disruptions.
