The bodies of an unmarried couple were recovered from a house in Deshalpur village under Suri police station in West Bengal’s Birbhum district on Tuesday morning, with police investigating whether the deaths were suicides or involved foul play.
The deceased man was identified as Sheikh Imran, a resident of Gopalpur village in the same police station area. He was reportedly in a long-term relationship with a 17-year-old girl from Deshalpur, whom he was allegedly planning to marry.
According to local residents, the two families had held discussions about the proposed marriage. However, Imran’s family was reportedly opposed to the relationship. Locals have suggested that opposition to the marriage may have contributed to the deaths, though police said the circumstances had not yet been established.
Preliminary information suggests Imran went to the girl’s house on Monday night. On Tuesday morning, family members and neighbours reportedly found the house locked and received no response from inside. They subsequently broke open the door and found Imran hanging inside the house, while the girl was found lying on a bed.
Police officials said certain marks were found around the girl’s neck during the initial examination.
Suri police reached the spot after receiving information and recovered both bodies. They were taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared them dead. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, and investigators said the autopsy report would help establish the exact cause and circumstances of the deaths.
A senior Birbhum police officer said both families had been informed and that the preliminary investigation suggested the possibility that the couple had died by suicide. However, the officer said police were also investigating the possibility of foul play.
“We are awaiting the post-mortem report. Preliminary investigation reveals that both might have died by suicide. However, an investigation has been launched to find out whether they committed suicide or whether there was any foul play involved,” the officer said.
Investigators are also examining whether any other person was involved or whether the couple was allegedly pressured or instigated by others.
No arrests or detentions have been reported so far.
