India on Tuesday called on the international community to take note of alleged human rights violations in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and hold Pakistan accountable for what it described as repeated abuses against civilians.
Addressing a media briefing in New Delhi, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said public protests in PoK had been met with what he termed repression, blackouts and the use of force, resulting in more than 90 deaths and injuries to several others.
“We have seen the kind of human rights violations that were committed in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and other parts of the country,” Jaiswal said, urging the international community to hold Pakistan accountable for its “misdeeds”, “abuses” and alleged violations of human rights.
Responding to a question about the situation in Balochistan, where Independence Day observances were taking place, the MEA spokesperson said India continued to monitor developments around the world while drawing attention to the situation in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Jaiswal also referred to protests that had taken place in PoK in recent months, including during and ahead of elections. He said public discontent had been met with force and restrictions, with more than 90 people reportedly killed and many others injured.
His remarks came amid reports of protests in PoK over issues including electricity prices and the cost of essential commodities. The demonstrations have also included demands for political reforms, greater accountability and more representative governance.
The spokesperson was also asked about a representation by Americans of Kashmiri heritage seeking UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ intervention over the situation in PoK.
Social media videos circulated by various accounts, including the Joint Awami Action Committee, have purportedly shown clashes and alleged use of force during protests. Some footage has also shown women fleeing amid violence during a demonstration in Kotli.
India has urged the international community to take note of the developments and ensure accountability for alleged human rights abuses.
