The Monsoon Session of the Jharkhand Assembly was adjourned sine die on Tuesday, a day ahead of schedule, amid persistent disruptions over alleged irregularities in JPSC-JSSC recruitment examinations, police action against protesting students and the statewide bandh called by the BJP.
The House witnessed repeated slogan-shouting and protests by members of both the ruling coalition and the Opposition, preventing normal legislative proceedings.
When the Assembly reconvened at noon, Opposition MLAs resumed their protest over the JPSC-JSSC controversy. Tensions escalated after Minister Irfan Ansari raised slogans against BJP legislators.
Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi attempted to address the House, but the commotion intensified, with several legislators from both sides entering the well.
Ministers Deepika Pandey Singh, Irfan Ansari, Shilpi Neha Tirkey and Yogendra Mahto were among those from the ruling side seen in the well, while Opposition members continued raising slogans against the government.
Amid the disruption, Finance Minister Radha Krishna Kishore tabled his report, which was passed despite the continued uproar. The House was subsequently adjourned until 2 p.m.
When proceedings resumed, the deadlock continued, with Opposition members demanding answers from the government on alleged irregularities in the JPSC-JSSC examinations, the police lathi-charge on students and the Jharkhand bandh called by the BJP.
During the proceedings, Chief Minister Hemant Soren addressed the Assembly on the JPSC-JSSC controversy. He accused the Opposition of politicising the students’ movement and alleged that political interests were being pursued at the expense of young aspirants’ future.
With the disruptions continuing, Speaker Mahato announced that the Monsoon Session would be adjourned sine die. The session had originally been scheduled to continue until August 12.
While announcing the adjournment, the Speaker said he was taking the decision with a “heavy and saddened heart”.
Expressing strong displeasure over the repeated disruptions, he said the conduct of Opposition parties gave the impression that they did not want the House to function smoothly.
