Amid the ongoing student agitation over recruitment examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC), Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Tuesday said his government was prepared to cancel the 14th JPSC Preliminary Examination and the backlog examinations.
Addressing the Jharkhand Assembly, Soren said examinations conducted through TDPL, the agency associated with JPSC examinations, would also be investigated. He said the government would seek technical and academic assistance from premier institutions, including the IITs and IIMs, to reform the state’s recruitment examination system.
Soren said the government was committed to making recruitment examinations more transparent, credible and secure. He indicated that expert consultations would form part of the proposed overhaul aimed at strengthening and modernising the examination process.
Questioning the role of TDPL, the Chief Minister said the agency was based in Uttar Pradesh and had links with Bihar. He alleged that agencies such as these had been allowed to put the future of Jharkhand’s youth at risk.
Soren said the government would not hesitate to order investigations into examinations that had attracted complaints, allegations and suspicions. He maintained that the administration was focused on addressing the grievances of students and ensuring justice.
The Chief Minister also accused the Opposition, particularly BJP leaders, of attempting to gain political mileage from the student movement. He alleged that opposition leaders were using the students’ agitation for political purposes and misleading young aspirants instead of supporting a fair resolution of their concerns.
The Assembly witnessed repeated sloganeering and protests by Opposition members during Soren’s speech. Responding to the disruption, the Chief Minister said those who spoke about protecting democracy were themselves undermining the dignity of the House.
Soren said the government had already taken decisions on the examination-related issues and would proceed with its plans despite the Opposition’s protests.
Referring to Monday’s student march towards the Assembly, Soren said the administration and police had exercised restraint during the demonstration. He noted that security restrictions are routinely enforced around constitutional institutions, including the Assembly, Parliament and Legislative Councils, but protesters had still managed to reach close to the Assembly premises.
The Chief Minister further alleged that certain groups were misleading students by operating through different identities and platforms. He accused the Opposition of attempting to obstruct the investigation process from reaching its logical conclusion.
Taking a political swipe at the BJP, Soren also quoted lines from a poem to suggest that the party’s political decline was not over. “There is still room for further decline,” he remarked, adding that the process had only begun.
