The death toll from the 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck western Colombia on Monday has risen to 132, while more than 570 people have been injured, according to the latest government update.
The earthquake damaged 1,575 homes and affected infrastructure at six airports, where commercial flight operations have been suspended, Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella said in Bogota.
The government has declared a state of national disaster to facilitate relief and response efforts following the earthquake.
According to the Colombian Geological Service, the quake struck at 7:34 a.m. local time, with its epicentre near San Jose del Palmar in the department of Choco, at a depth of 96 km.
Authorities are maintaining contact with the capitals of affected departments and local administrations to assess the damage and determine immediate relief requirements.
The disaster has drawn messages of solidarity from leaders around the world.
French President Emmanuel Macron expressed condolences to the victims and their families and praised rescue teams and others involved in relief operations. He said France stood with Colombia and that the country could count on its friendship and support.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also expressed solidarity with Colombia and neighbouring Ecuador, which was affected by the tremors. He offered condolences to those who lost their lives and urged the international community to support affected people and countries.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Italy was closely following developments and expressed solidarity with the Colombian people, affected families and rescue and relief personnel.
Rescue and assessment operations are continuing as authorities work to determine the full extent of the earthquake’s impact.
