All India Muslim Jamaat national president Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi has supported the introduction of a dress code at the ISKCON Temple in Vrindavan and called for modest attire at places of worship across religions.
Speaking to IANS, Bareilvi said women should wear full-length, modest clothing when visiting temples, gurdwaras, churches and dargahs, arguing that visitors should respect the sanctity and dignity of religious places.
He said the same principle should apply irrespective of the faith associated with a place of worship. Bareilvi also linked modest dressing with Indian cultural traditions and urged women in particular to be mindful of their attire while visiting religious sites.
The comments came after the ISKCON Temple in Vrindavan introduced mandatory guidelines requiring devotees to wear modest clothing. Short or immodest attire has been prohibited, while notice boards have been installed at the temple entrances informing visitors about the dress code and other guidelines, including those concerning photography.
Ramadal Trust president Kalki Ram also backed the move, saying dress codes should be introduced at temples to ensure that visitors maintain standards of decency. At the same time, he said the ISKCON Temple should undertake improvements in its functioning.
Sant Satyendra Das Vedanti welcomed the dress-code decision as well and suggested that similar guidelines should be considered at temples across the country.
The ISKCON Temple in Vrindavan is among the prominent religious destinations associated with Lord Krishna and attracts devotees from across India and abroad.
